JOSHUA TREE DOCUMENTARY
Jan 3rd - Feb 14th, 2009

On January 3rd, I left for a six week sabbatical out near Joshua Tree in the high desert of southern California.

The object was to write, practice, and record music. However, I decided to make a documentary of the process as well. The first six episodes are all pretty dry and literal; after that I started getting more entertaining with my film style. All the background music you hear is mine.

EPISODE 1:
Getting there & loading in

The house I'm renting is out at the end of a long dirt road, and as I got there early Saturday evening, it was snowing and turning dark (meanwhile, I still needed to find the key hidden outside).

EPISODE 2:
Unpacking Groceries

This is me rambling to the camera trying to keep myself from being afraid of the cold, empty house.

Like I said, these early episodes are lo-concept, sorry.

EPISODE 4:
Samson Gets Me Lifted

WARNING - nearly gratuitous drug use shown. This is the end of night 1, with a smoky reward enjoyed by our narrator and his off-kilter reflections on his new life.

EPISODE 5:
A Loser Sets Up His Drums

Now nice and loopy, Patrick slips into some comfortable pajama bottoms (in the gayest possible way), and then he proceeds to set up his drums.

EPISODE 6:
Getting Ready for Bed

Oh, that Patrick winds down his first night at the cabin, brushing his teeth and removing contacts while offering some thoughts on the cabin and foreshadowing of the fun to follow.

However, this is probably THE single most boring episode in the series. Nevertheless, it's crucial for that empathetic feeling of being there with him.

EPISODE 7:
Exploring My Yard

The first morning I awoke at the cabin, I had the exciting phenomenon known as daylight to assist me in assimilating into my new environment. It's tasty.

EPISODE 8:
Piano & Whiskey

This has a couple informal performances of some songs I was chart-reading out of a Jazz book as well as my christening of the gigantic bottle of whiskey I bought.

Song 1 - "I'll Know"

Song 2 - "Girl from Ipanema"

EPISODE 9:
Heaven Needs a Better Toilet

My second morning, I scamper up the rocks behind my house to eat an orange (not pictured, sorry). I go nuts living in my meta-eats-meta Charlie Kaufman world. And, yes don't worry, I discuss in detail a poop problem.

EPISODE 10:
Oh, that Cooking Show

Before "Julia and Julie", there was Oh, that Patrick attempting to demonstrate his "slightly-more-sophisticated-than-a-6-year-old-on-Mother's-Day" cooking prowess.
